PMAC AGM 2018: Disaster Management and Emergency Response initiative

OAS-CIP presents disaster management and emergency response initiative to PMAC AGM

Swoboda2018, May 14: The Organization of American States (OAS) Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) is sending Project Coordinator, Mona Swoboda, to address the 21st Annual General Meeting of the Port Management Association of the Caribbean (PMAC) in Jamaica. She will attend for the specific purpose of presenting to the regional port management sector the CIP’s Disaster Management and Emergency Response initiative.

The CIP has been working on capacity building in port logistics as part of its Natural Disaster Response initiative. The objective of the project is to improve pre and  post emergency / disaster management readiness and logistic capabilities in the Caribbean region.

Declaring the PMAC AGM to be “a very important platform” for promoting this multi-lateral initiative, CIP Secretary, Jorge Duran recently confirmed Ms. Swoboda’s participation at the AGM, to be held at The Jewel Dunn’s River Resort, June 27, 28 and 29, 2018.

Mr. Duran participated in the PORTSIDE-PMAC Caribbean Port Management Workshop in Panama City, in January 2018, at which a Quick-response Regional Relief and Disaster Assistance network was mooted. Ms. Swoboda’s attendance at the PMAC AGM in Jamaica is an indication of the increasingly close working relationship being established between these two international bodies.

Ms. Swoboda, who coordinates design and implementation of port development projects and activities, according to CIP-OAS mandates, pays special attention to sustainable logistic operations, comprehensive port security measures; and, inclusive policies with gender equality.  Her work allows her to create synergies to facilitate strategic alliances for development of a competitive, secure, and sustainable Port Sector in the Western Hemisphere.

Her presentation, Emergency Response and Disaster Management in Ports: A CIP Approach, is the first item scheduled for the Strategic Session to begin at 1.00 pm, June 27.
